WooCommerce Payment Plans & Deposits Explained
Deposits, installments, BNPL, and merchant-run payment plans—what each option really means for your store, fees, and checkout UX.
Four ways stores offer “pay over time”
- Buy Now, Pay Later (Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay): third-party credit, provider fees, fast to enable
- Gateway installments: some processors split payments for you
- Deposit plugins: take partial payment now, balance later
- Merchant-run payment plans: you define the schedule; your gateway collects
When merchant-run plans win
Choose merchant-run plans when you sell high-ticket items, event packages, or custom orders and want control—no BNPL fee haircut, schedules that match your fulfillment, and checkout that still feels like WooCommerce.
Watch for plugins that break Cart & Checkout Blocks, round coupons incorrectly, or ignore tax and fees when splitting totals. Accurate money math is the difference between a plan customers trust and support tickets.
What Payment Plan Express is built for
Payment Plan Express is our WooCommerce product for manual installments and equal-split plans with optional deposits. It is designed for classic and Blocks checkout, coupon-aware schedules, and Stripe automation where you need saved-card collection.
FAQ
Is a payment plan the same as BNPL?
No. BNPL is consumer credit through a third party. A merchant-run plan is an agreement between you and the customer, usually charged on your existing gateway.
Do payment plans work with coupons and tax?
They should. If a plugin splits the pre-discount subtotal and ignores tax or fees, installments will not match what WooCommerce shows as the order total.
