Smartsheet to MS Project Exporter

Plans that travel cleanly from Smartsheet to Microsoft Project

We built a Windows desktop exporter that reads Smartsheet plans and writes schema-valid Microsoft Project XML—so teams keep planning where they work and open native .mpp workflows without retyping schedules.

Industry

Project management / PM tooling

Stack

Python, Smartsheet API, MSPDI XML, Windows desktop

Services

Custom desktop software, API integration, data mapping

The Project

Plans that travel cleanly from Smartsheet to Microsoft Project

Challenge

Schedules lived in Smartsheet but stakeholders needed MS Project

Manual rebuilds dropped hierarchy, predecessors, and durations. Spreadsheet exports were not trustworthy for native Microsoft Project files.

What We Built

A double-click Smartsheet → MSPDI exporter

The app authenticates to Smartsheet, maps columns automatically or manually, preserves outline levels and predecessor links, and writes Microsoft Project–compatible XML with tokens stored in Windows Credential Manager.

Result

Open Smartsheet work in MS Project without rework

PMs export once and open a structured project file—no Python installs for end users, no copy-paste schedule archaeology.

Highlights

What shipped

  • Smartsheet API connect with sheet picker
  • Auto and manual column mapping
  • Hierarchy and predecessor preservation
  • Schema-valid MSPDI XML output
  • Credential Manager token storage (no telemetry)
